Mt Aconcagua

Trip Overview

South America’s highest mountain, and one of the Seven Summits

Aconcagua is the highest mountain in South America and the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia, rising 1000m above its neighbours and visible from the Pacific coast 100 kilometers away. Our itinerary allows time for acclimatisation and establishing higher camps before attempting the summit via the ‘normal route’. While this is not a technical climb, the combination of extreme altitude, volatile weather and the need to complete up to 12 hours of sustained climbing on summit day ensures a very challenging expedition.

The Route

We will be climbing the Normal Route of Aconcagua which is a classic climb that takes us up through the Horcones Valley.

The route starts with a 40km trek from our start point into our Base Camp on Aconcagua, called “Plaza de Mulas”. This trek takes us three days and is a great acclimatisation process. On the way we trek to Plaza Francia to view the South Wall of Aconcagua.

We use mules to take all the gear to this point and stay overnight at Confluencia Camp for two nights. The third day’s walk to base camp takes a whole day and it is tough.

Trek Itinerary

Our expedition starts in Mendoza, Argentina. A representative will be waiting for you at the airport. We will stay at the hotel in the city. A group meeting will follow and you will meet with your guides and team members. We will also head out for a Welcome Dinner in Mendoza as a team.

After you obtain individual park entrance and ascent permits, assisted by your guide, we meet at our commercial office to finalize all the arrangements of the expedition. Later we travel to Penitentes, where we stay at a Hotel at the entrance to the mountain. There we get the equipment ready for transportation to base camp by mule.

We drive you to Horcones Park, where we get our first view of the mountain. We will get our permits

checked at the Ranger station. Then, we head off to Confluencia by walking 4 or 5 hours.

We’ve included this day in order to acclimatize better, and give you more chances to summit. We’ll trek for about 5 hours until we arrive to Plaza Francia, base camp of the impressive Aconcagua South Wall.

This is the biggest day of the trek into Base Camp. After 8-9 hours hiking across and up through a very steep path, we reach Plaza de Mulas, the biggest base camp in Aconcagua Park. By the end of the day, most of us will feel the altitude.

This gives us time to acclimatise and enjoy the mountains.

This day we will carry equipment and food to Camp 1. This is a challenging day where we gain 1,000m in altitude with a heavy load. Then we’ll return to Base Camp. Climbing high and sleeping low allows us to acclimatise better before moving up onto the mountain later.

Complete rest day hanging out in Base Camp recovering from the previous day.

The following morning, we start the ascent. We move to Camp 1, called “Plaza Canada”.

Camp 2, called “Nido de Condores” (meaning Condor Nest), is located in a high pass at 5,400 m. and provides a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains.

This day, we carry equipment to Camp 3 called “Camp Colera”. After carrying the equipment up, we return to Camp 2 to sleep, to give our bodies more chances to acclimatize.

We start a 4-hour ascent to Camp 3, located on the North Ridge. We will prepare our tents, eat and rest, to be ready to get to the summit.

This is the most demanding day of our expedition. We leave early and meet the sunrise at Independencia Refuge (6,500m). We then continue on to the summit and have a chance to take in our accomplishment and the incredible views and experience before heading back down.

We have two extra days set aside on our itinerary in case of bad weather conditions that prevent us from summitting on Day 13. These extra days are built in to provide the best possible conditions for each participant to summit. If we don’t need them we descend to Base Camp.

Descend from Camp 3 to Base Camp. We’ll enjoy a great dinner to celebrate the experience.

We have breakfast and then start the descent from Plaza de Mulas to Penitentes. There is a private transport waiting for us to take us to the hotel in Mendoza City. Once we get back, we head out for our celebration dinner in Mendoza.

We have breakfast at the hotel together to conclude our expedition.
